9 Easy and Natural Ways to Fight Aging

When you think of fighting the aging process, you might picture expensive plastic surgery treatments and feel discouraged. The truth is, of course, that we’re all going to age. However, you can slow the process and age gracefully, without draining your bank account at the doctor’s office. These nine anti-aging methods are backed up by research, and they’re surprisingly simple, safe, and natural.

Eat more fat. Yes, really! But not just any fat will do. Omega-3 fatty acids fight the signs of aging and reduce inflammation in the body. Make sure to include plenty of nuts, seeds, and salmon in your diet.

Include “superfruits” in your diet. All fruits are good for you, but certain ones contain unusually high levels of antioxidants. In particular, goji berries and pomegranates have made waves in the nutrition world lately. Researchers say they can fight disease, help us look younger, promote weight loss, and more.

Try green tea. We keep learning more and more about the benefits of green tea. Last year, it made the news as a potential breast cancer preventive. Researchers are currently testing the affects on other forms of cancer. Another study indicates that green tea can reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s.

Take care of your skin. A healthy diet can keep your complexion looking younger, but you can apply some of those dietary benefits straight to your face! In particular, a form of vitamin A called Retinol is a common ingredient in many face creams. It encourages the turnover of old skin cells to reveal a smoother, more supple complexion.

Have a glass of wine. Red wine contains resveratrol, which reduced the risk of obesity and diabetes in mice and led to longer lifespans. But of course, more is not necessarily better. Too much alcohol isn’t good for anyone, so limit your consumption to about a glass per day.

Exercise. Exercise does more than help you maintain your weight. It also boosts your mood, strengthens bones, and keeps your mind sharp. And of course, strength training fights flab.

Exercise your mind, too. You can actually combat the common problems of memory loss by training your brain each day. Even as we age, it has the ability to rewire itself and make new connections. So pick up some crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or some other type of puzzle that intrigues you.

Lower your stress. Excessive stress boosts the hormones adrenaline and cortisol, which are linked to high blood pressure, various health problems, and mood problems such as anxiety and depression. So work to lower stress in whatever way works for you. For some, yoga and meditation work well. For others, exercise or a fun hobby are the key. Experiment until you find your stress buster.

Spread the love. Speaking of stress, here’s an interesting way to combat it. Love boosts oxytocin, the bonding hormone that can lower anxiety. Falling in love also boosts your self esteem and even keeps your immune system healthy. So, if you’re married, continue working on your relationship so that the romance never dies. If you’re single, maybe it’s time to get out there and shake things up!
