Is This Herb the Key to a Longer Healthier Life?

It’s likely that you’ve never even heard of jiaogulan, an herb from Guizhou, the mountainous region in southwest China. That’s not surprising, since out of the 50,000 or so medicinal herbs in the world, only a few hundred are well known outside of their regions of origin. However, the people of Guizhou have been steeping the plant into tea for centuries, and have long believed in its healthful and anti-aging properties.

Scientists who have studied the herb discovered that it shares many properties with ginseng, of which you’ve probably heard. So far, here’s what we know about jiaogulan…

Like ginseng, jiaogulan contains saponins. In the 1970s, Japanese scientists Masahiro Nagai and Tsunematsu Takemoto compared ginseng and jiaogulan, and discovered that both plants contain similar compounds called saponins. While ginseng contains 28 of these compounds, jiaogulan boasts 82 known saponins called gypenosides. These compounds promote powerful health effects within the body, protecting the health of vital organs. Jiaogulan therefore provides similar longevity-boosting effects as ginseng, which is more widely known.

Jiaogulan boosts powerful antioxidant activity in the body. Consumption of jiaogulan tea prompts production of the body’s own antioxidant, called superoxide dismutase (SOD). SOD protects cells from the premature destruction that often results from exposure to various harmful agents in our environment that we consume through food, air, water, and so on.

Jiaogulan good for your heart. Jiaogulan reduces LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) while boosting HDL cholesterol (the good kind) and increasing blood flow. It also reduces blood pressure about half as well as a popular prescription drug that targets high blood pressure.

Jiaogulan is an adaptogen. It boosts energy, endurance, stamina, and recovery time, making the herb an excellent choice for athletes.

Jiaogulan targets stress. Drinkers of the tea enjoy lower mental and emotional stress, and the herb might even work well for reducing jet lag.

Other benefits. Jiaogulan protects the liver and can help to stabilize blood sugar. It even contains the flavonol ampelopsin, which can be used to reduce the symptoms of a hangover.

Of course, we know that all supplements should be taken within the context of a healthy lifestyle, well-rounded diet, and regular exercise. Jiaogulan can be found in the GIA Wellness product Heart-Fit, so if you’re interested in learning more about the protective and longevity-boosting effects of jiaogulan, please contact us for details regarding this powerful, ancient herb.
