5 Steps to Ditching Soda

If you’re like most people, you might be drinking anywhere from a hundred to a thousand calories per day, via your favorite brand of soda. Or, perhaps you’ve switched to diet soda, but you’re now rightfully concerned about the health effects of artificial sweeteners. Either way, you know you need to ditch the soft drinks. But since soda is quite an addictive habit, you might need help to get started.

Take these five steps to ditch your soda habit, and remember: It takes a few months to form new habits! The longer you stick with it, the more likely you are to succeed at ditching soda.

Keep track of your soda intake. Do you even know how much soda you’re drinking? Keep a journal for about two weeks, and log each soda that you drink (along with time of day, and which foods you’re eating alongside the drink). You’ll begin to see a pattern, and understand how many soft drinks you’re really drinking, along with any dietary triggers that make you want to drink more.

Take it slowly. Drinking too much sugar (or artificial sweeteners) can change the way your taste buds interact with foods and drinks. Even something as simple as water can taste “bad” to a person who drinks several sodas per day. So instead of going cold turkey, start off slowly by replacing one soda per day with water. Over time you can gradually decrease your soda consumption, and increase your water intake, without risking burnout and giving up on your plan altogether.

Explore the alternatives. All the different flavor alternatives are part of the reason you enjoy soda so much. That’s one of the main reasons people find switching to water to be so difficult. If you’re craving a bubbly drink, try the many varieties of sparkling water that are available on the market. Or, experiment with adding a splash of fruit juice or other flavors.

Get it out of the house. After you have progressed in your plan, and you’re no longer drinking soda daily, get it out of the house. You might still enjoy a soda here and there, at the movies or a restaurant, but for the most part you need to keep the temptation away from you. This rule applies to the workplace too, if you tend to visit the vending machine. Stock your favorite bottled water or sparking water in the break room, so you can avoid the temptation of soda during your work days.

Stay hydrated. You’ve associated soda with thirst for so long, that you might crave it any time you’re dehydrated and thirsty. Make sure you stay hydrated and stave off those cravings, by keeping a bottle of water nearby and sipping on it throughout the day. But of course, if your cells can’t properly absorb the water you drink, you will still suffer the effects (and cravings) of dehydration.
