Healthy “On the Go” Snacks

Lady using a modern vending machineSummer is prime time for road trips and family vacations, but it can be difficult to stick to a healthy diet when you’re traveling. With vending machines and convenience stores around every corner, temptation seems to lurk everywhere! Regardless, you can stay on track toward your weight loss and health goals, by following these simple rules for snacking on the go.

Avoid the following vending machine staples:

Crackers – High in sodium, these contain trans fats, and aren’t as healthy as you might think
Chips – Also high in sodium, many are treated with suspicious preservatives like BHA and BHT
Cookies – These are often high in sugar, saturated fats, and preservatives
Pastries – Options like packaged cinnamon rolls and apple pies are made with corn syrup, and are high in calories and preservatives
Candy – You already know candy is high in sugar, but many brands also include artificial flavors and colors
Soft drinks – High in calories and devoid of any nutritional value, soft drinks won’t satisfy your thirst but will add pounds to your frame

If you absolutely must grab a snack from a vending machine or convenience store, look for these options:

Trail mix – Look for unsalted nuts and dried fruit, rather than a variety high in sugary cereal and candy
Nuts – Nuts contain heart-healthy fats, but you must watch your serving sizes carefully since they are also high in calories
Granola bars – Look for options under 200 calories, containing whole grains like oat and flax, and low in sugar
Popcorn – Stick to air-popped and low-salt varieties
Water – This should always be your go-to drink of choice, and you can add flavor with a squeeze of fruit juice if you wish

As always, it’s even better if you can anticipate your needs and take your own food with you. Keep a small cooler in your car, and stock up on fresh berries, pre-cut veggies, yogurt, or any other healthful treats that you enjoy. Remember that many grocery stores offer packaged produce and single servings of your favorite healthy foods. Stock up before you hit the road, and you won’t have to worry about limited options along the way!
