Staying Healthy When You Work from Home

running womanWorking from home should be the health nut’s dream. You aren’t pressured into fattening restaurant meals by co-workers, you can design your work schedule around your exercise routine, and no one is tempting you with donuts in the break room. But sometimes, working from home presents its own unique challenges to a healthy lifestyle. Try these methods to keep your fitness a top priority.

Don’t get too comfortable. It’s tempting to kick back on the couch and work from your laptop, but you might get so comfortable that you stay there long after you’ve finished your work. Hours later, you’ve watched countless Youtube videos, and now you’re late to your yoga class. Whoops! Resist the temptation to get too cozy, and sit at a desk instead.

Get up and move around. When you work in an office, your schedule might demand that you get up for various reasons. But now that you don’t have to walk downstairs to the mail room, or go up a floor for meetings, you find that you don’t move around at all. That’s not healthy! Set a timer to remind you, and stretch, take a short walk, jump rope, or do some type of exercise for a few minutes each hour.

Establish regular meal times. When you eat in front of a TV screen late at night, you aren’t paying attention to how much food you’re eating. Every dieter knows this! Unfortunately, the same goes for your snacks during the work day. Resist the temptation to snack in front of the computer, and take meal breaks instead.

Stock your kitchen with healthy foods. You don’t have co-workers tempting you to eat out with them, but you’re no better off at home when your kitchen is stocked with Little Debbies and potato chips. Keep healthy, low-prep foods on hand for busy work days.

Avoid procrastination. When you make your own schedule, it’s easy to procrastinate. Avoid this temptation, and make yourself follow a regular schedule instead. Set an appointment to exercise, and create email reminders if you need them.

Enlist a friend’s help. Working from home can be very rewarding, but you have to be careful not to become a hermit. When you set those exercise appointments, make sure some of them are with a friend, so that someone holds you accountable. It’s even better if your friend stops by the house to get you.

Wear your workout clothes. The lack of a dress code is one of the best parts of working from home. Unfortunately, this means you’re tempted to lounge in your pajamas all day. Get dressed in workout clothes and running shoes first thing in the morning, and you’ll be ready to go when it’s time for your exercise appointment. You’ve heard the saying, “dress for the job you want”. In your case, you should dress like a healthy, fit person!
